Beat Diesel launched

With the Indian market flooded with small cars, it seems a bit mind numbing to think that there are very few diesel cars in this segment. Finally though, General Motors has come with a diesel offering in its new Chevrolet Beat TCDi. With no real opponents to compete with, the Beat diesel will serve as a tester for all the companies fighting it out in this arena.

Beat is powered by 936cc 3-cylinder derivative of the 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine from FIAT. The engine is good for 56-60PS of power and should be a lucrative proposition for the mileage conscious entry level customer. It is said that this particular engine is being locally developed by the Indian arm of FIAT Powertrain Technologies (FPT) for Chevrolet India. GM engineers have managed to attain excellent NVH levels on the car and the vibrations are even lower than the Volkswagen Polo Diesel. The Polo Diesel also uses a 3-cylinder motor, but produces more power and significantly better torque.

As the petrol prices are high as compared to diesel the demand for diesel has increased significantly and at this rate and fuel economy this car will sell like hot cakes.
